About Energy Finance Tracker

The Energy Finance Tracker (EFT) is a centralized platform detailing proposed energy investments from 16 development finance institutions tracked by the Early Warning System. Updated quarterly, it provides an interactive analysis of financing trends across various metrics, including region, development bank, investment amount, risk rating, energy sector, and fossil fuel linkages. The tracker comprehensively covers direct energy projects, investments in financial intermediaries, technical assistance and policy support loans, as well as funding for associated infrastructure.

Energy Finance Tracker Report (2024)

The Energy Finance Tracker (EFT) report, published by the International Accountability Project and partners, analyzes investments from 16 major development banks between 2022 and 2024. Tracking 933 projects totaling over $139.8 billion, the report reveals that development banks continue to fund fossil fuels, particularly oil and gas, despite climate commitments.

Key findings highlight a shift toward private financing, which reduces transparency, and a reliance on "false solutions" like large-scale hydropower and carbon offsets that often harm local communities. The report advocates for a community-led transition, urging development banks to divest from fossil fuels and prioritize small-scale, decentralized renewable energy models.

Comparative Insights into Energy Finance Tracker Trends (2026)

In January 2024, we released the Energy Finance Tracker Report, an analysis of development banks’ investments in the energy sector between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023. This report covered two years of data on investment amounts, risk categories, and sub-sectors, all housed in an interactive platform called the Energy Finance Tracker (EFT). The following table provides a comprehensive comparison between the trends established in that initial report and the fresh data tracked by the EFT from January 2024 to December 2025.

Watch the series of Energy Finance Tracker regional consultations

In 2024, IAP and partners held five regional meetings across Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Central Asia, and Southeast and South Asia. The goal was to discuss new trends from the Energy Finance Tracker (EFT) and highlight community-led approaches for a fair energy transition. During these meetings, representatives from civil society organizations and communities shared their experiences protecting human and environmental rights and making sure the energy transition reflects local contexts and priorities.
