The International Accountability Project (IAP) challenges destructive development projects that uproot and impoverish millions of people across the Global South. Working with grassroots and international partners, IAP advocates for international policies that respect the rights and livelihoods of people threatened by unjust development and supports communities to hold their ground and defend their homes, environment and human rights.
Vision
We envision a world in which human connection to land, vibrant communities, healthy ecosystems, and democratic decision-making are the foundation for just and sustainable life on Earth.
Values
The following principles guide our work:
Defend communities' right to determine their own future. Respect for the right of all peoples to Free Prior Informed Consent must form the foundation for all decision-making said to be for
development.
Amplify the voices of
those most affected by development decision-making, such that their own voices, priorities and experiences powerfully shape the debates on projects and policies.

Respect the power of
community members to make informed decisions about their own
trajectory. We are committed to help
facilitate the sharing of adequate information; both in order to contribute to
community members’ empowerment to make these decisions, and to enable community
members to understand and assert their rights in development
decision-making.
Advocate for gender
equality. We recognize that the
silencing and submission of women takes place in intimate linkage to the
destruction of our Earth mother. In all aspects of our work, we seek to support
and strengthen women as powerful members and leaders of their communities.
Collaborate in
coalition. We build long-term
working relationships based on solidarity, friendship, and mutual respect among
colleagues from the Global North and the Global South who work to defend human
rights and the environment. At every
step--in our advocacy campaigns, our educational
materials, and our awareness-raising media--we aim to represent, to the best of our ability, the priorities and
positions of our diverse partners.
Serve as a bridge and
a catalyst to create robust and sustainable networks of people and
organizations that lead to strengthened regional responses and coalitions. The
strength of our movement depends on connecting humans and
human communities in genuine, life-affirming ways. Thus united, these movements are more capable
of demanding justice for existing harm and inspiring profound change in the course of human
development.
Mobilize
art as a powerful tool for change. In a global order in which profit and macro-economic growth are the primary indicators measured to determine worth and progress, art is a vital medium to transcend this entrenched development ideology. We work with filmmakers,
musicians, artists, photographers, and others, to capture the stories in which
we are engaged in ways that speak powerfully to people all over the world.
