A People's Guide to Involuntary Resettlement

The IAP is currently drafting the People's Guide to Forced Displacement: Rights, Risks and Resistance—a popular education manual for communities fighting to defend their rights against unjust displacement and involuntary resettlement.

We are committed to making the process of creating the guide one that involves many of our partner groups—through partners defining the content that will be most useful for communities in struggle, providing advice on structuring the guide, contributing case studies, and helping to design an effective distribution strategy to ensure the guide reaches communities in need of its information.

As a first phase in the guide development process, IAP Summer Fellow Nina Robertson met with a wide array of community members and partner organizations in South and Southeast Asia during June and July 2007. See slideshow of photos from Nina’s trip.

IAP continues to be in conversation with partner groups in Asia, as well as Latin America and Africa. This critical input from our partners who live and work on the frontlines of unjust displacement projects is defining the content, layout and focus of the guide.

The Guide will outline communities’ rights, provide key background information on displacement and resettlement, and include stories/case studies/lessons learned from communities who have organized successfully in diverse ways to assert their rights in the face of development-induced displacement and resettlement.

The final resource will also be accompanied by an educational DVD/video, to facilitate information sharing, including with low- or non-literate groups.
