Current Initiatives

IAP's initiatives fall within four program areas: institutional policy change, project-specific advocacy, research and popular education, and arts and media. Each initiative is strategically chosen and together they support our objectives to: (i) steer development finance toward projects with equitable benefits, especially in the energy sector; (ii) raise the profile of the impacts of our development model; (iii) give people the tools and capacity to envision and enact alternatives, and (iv) empower and support bottom-up efforts to challenge unjust displacement.

IAP's current initiatives:

ADB Safeguard Policy Update
In July 2005, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that it would update its three “Safeguard Policies": Environment Policy (2002), Policy on Involuntary Resettlement (1995), and Policy on Indigenous Peoples (1998).

Phulbari Coal Mine Project
The Phulbari Coal Project is a planned open pit coal mine in Northwest Bangladesh and includes the construction of at least one 500-MW power plant. The AsDB is considering the provision of a US$100 million private sector loan.

People's Guide
IAP is currently drafting the People's Guide to Forced Displacement--an illustrated guide with critical information about risks, rights and resistance strategies for communities facing development-induced displacement and resettlement.

Asia Video Advocacy Project
IAP, WITNESS, EarthRights International and Chiang Mai University’s Unit for Social and Environmental Research convened a Video Advocacy Workshop in 2008 for 15 Asian activists committed to using video for development justice.

Postcard Advocacy Campaign
IAP is coordinating a regional postcard advocacy campaign in conjunction with the Asia-wide civil society campaign around the Asian Development Bank's Safeguard Policies. For more on this, see IAP's website on the ADB Safeguard Policy Update.
